Curtain lights are a grid of bead LEDs similar to the ones used in the Christmas String Lights. They are arranged in a 20 columns of 26 rows of lights. These lights are able to be joined with up to 3 sets of the curtain lights to allow you to create longer marques of text or larger images.
Installation Tips
One of the most popular uses of curtain lights is to mount them onto a garage door to make a display on your garage door. A standard two-car garage is about 16ft, so it can accommodate three Curtain Gen 1 or the longest Curtain Gen 2.
C-Channel on Metal Garage Door
One method that has been popular with users has been to install the lights into a Hillman C-Channel Trim for 1/2″ Plywood (from Lowe’s) to the metal garage door using magnets. This install method allows you maintain a straight line of the lights to make a good grid, while also making it easily removable if needed (especially in the case of those who live in HOA neighborhoods).
I have been told that the C-Channel from Lowes Fits nice and snug whereas the one from Home Depot C-Channel are too loose.
Mounted Above Garage Door Frame
For my curtains I mounted my curtain lights on a 1×3 that I ripped in half. I then mounted the lights with 3M tape and some screw on mounts at several points along the strand. I then mounted the wood to the upper part of the garage door frame.
This is a little more permanent than the C-Channel method but still easily removable. At least I know the lights are not going anywhere.
Bottom of the Strands
The strands are also only connected at the top of the strands, this means that the stands will sway with the wind. To prevent this people have often chosen to either weigh the strands down with a PVC pipe. In the case of installing on a garage door using small magnet zip tie mounts to get them to stick at the bottom, but allow the garage door to still operate.
Cable Management
No matter which way that you end up mounting your lights, the hardest part for me was figuring out the cable management part of it. I have 3 of the Gen 1 curtains so I had to deal with 3 power adapters, this is the main thing about why I would want Gen 2, but I wasn’t going to upgrade when I had already gotten started with Gen 1, and they still work great.
I started by running the cable from the right most curtain down towards the middle of the middle curtain, occasionally zip tie the wire to the main wire of the center curtain. I then did the same with the left curtain and ran the power cable towards the middle curtain zip tying the wire to the main wire of the left curtain until meeting with the power cord for the center and right curtains.
I then ran the cables into the garage. I installed an extra shelf that I had above the bar of the garage door opener and installed the power strip there. I plugged in the curtains to that power strip and zip tied the excess slack of the power cables. I then ran an extension from my garage door opener’s outlet and ran that to the power strip.
